The Scholarship For You: Scholarship Types

There are four primary scholarship types: financial need, academic, background, and uniqueness.

Financial Need:

  1. Family Income
  2. Parent’s Education
  3. Financial Aid Eligibility

These scholarships are often provided by your school or state and awarded automatically. An example would be the South Carolina Need-Based Grant in which if you are a South Carolina Resident you are eligible for up to $2,500 based on your financial need provided by FAFSA.

Academic

  1. SAT/ACT Scores
  2. Field of Study
  3. GPA

These scholarships are often merit-based and applied directly to your student account if you meet the minimum test score, field of study or GPA requirements a good resource would be your school’s web page. In addition, they may be often by community members or national organizations to commemorate someone’s life and preserve their legacy.  Here’s an example of merit-based scholarship The Jack and Jill of America Foundation-Jacqueline Moore Bowles Scholarship in which it is for female majoring in communication.

Background:

  1. Gender
  2. Race
  3. Hometown
  4. Culture
  5. Religion

These scholarships are your first tier of specifications. Don’t be afraid to embrace being a minority and gain the assistance needed to pursue your dreams. Uniqueness:

These scholarships are often related to your own unique talent. This may include your athletic ability, hobby, or some other talent. Learning about these type of scholarships can be found through essay, art, and talent competition. An example would be National American Miss in which they are scholarship pageant or the Arts For Life Award for creative writing and various other art talents
